If you’ve been living on Mars for the past few years or simply hate sport or pop music you might not have heard of the Millennium Stadium. Situated in the heart of the city centre on the historic land of Cardiff Arms Park, the stadium is home to the Welsh Rugby Union and much more. Built in 1999 for the Rugby World Cup finals the stadium boast 74,000 seats, and a sliding roof, enabling them not only to play rugby and football in the dry, but also to stage massive concerts such as Tina Turner, Robbie Williams and world famous Tsunami gig in 2005.
Since 2001 it has been the home to all of the English FA’s big soccer matches such as the FA cup and League Play Offs whilst Wembley is being rebuilt. Quite why the FA want to go back to a giant athletics stadium in the middle of nowhere is beyond the ken of most people who’ve enjoyed the Cardiff Experience – watching the game in the dry then being able to wander into the pedestrianised city centre to enjoy all the bars and restaurants is a far appealing prospect than strolling around an industrial estate then sitting for hours on the North Circular.
If you’re not in town for a match or a concert why not try one of the excellent guided tours 02920 – 822 228.
